Applied Materials Appoints Eric Chen to Board of Directors
SANTA CLARA, Calif., November 5, 2015 - Applied Materials, Inc. today announced the appointment of Eric Chen to serve on its Board of Directors, effective immediately. Dr. Chen has also been appointed to serve as a member of the Strategy Committee of the Board.
"Eric is an accomplished executive and investor with extensive experience in China and around the world," said Wim Roelandts, chairman of the board of Applied Materials. "His technical expertise and global knowledge will be valuable assets to Applied Materials' board and executive management team and we warmly welcome him to the Company."
Dr. Chen is founder and CEO of BaseBit Technologies in Silicon Valley. From 2008 to 2015, he served as a managing director of Silver Lake, a leading private investment firm focused on technology, technology-enabled and related growth industries. Prior to Silver Lake, he was a senior vice president and served on the executive committee of ASML. He joined ASML following its acquisition of Brion Technologies in 2007, the company he cofounded as CEO in 2002. Prior to Brion, Dr. Chen was a senior vice president at J.P. Morgan. He serves as a member of the board of directors of Qihoo 360 and previously was on the board of directors of Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates.
Dr. Chen studied physics at Peking University and received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University. He has conducted theoretical physics research at Conseil Europeen pour la Recherche Nucleaire ("CERN") and at the Advanced Product Research Development Laboratory and MOS-13 facility for Motorola.
